You should see my wife’s 03 ML350. Woof. Rust over all four wheel wells, on the hood and lift gate, bottoms of the doors. Thing is just rusty as fuck.

If you though the metal was bad... dont even look at the plastic.

These and 202s have a rep for this, especially in harsh climates. I once saw a really rusty late run 126 out of Quebec, too, but I am not certain it hadn’t been repainted.

Late model Audi in particular the A3 which is one of primary reasons I bought my last 4. So German engineering.

According to some sources these rust issues were caused by bacteria infected paint.

I don’t know what “hot dip galvanize” means but it sounds deeply erotic.

What? Did they find a way to make plastic rust?

Could be a shoddy body repair done previously...but nah, I’ve seen many MB’s of that era rusting up here in Da Belt.

This is coastal New England so it’s just as bad for rust here.

If there’s a way, Mercedes-Benz will find it. DaimlerChrysler was baaad for everyone involved.

I’ve yet to see a ML of that vintage without rust or a paintjob from hell.

It astounds me that any steel object made to be subjected to the elements is not galvanized. It’s not even especially expensive to do.

If you look at old German plastic it cracks under the weight of your gaze... if you touch old German plastic, it disintegrates.

It’s like a plating for the metal. Water reacts with the galvanization slower than metal, and doesn’t make horrible bubbles. In combination with paint it works super well. It’s why Porsches made after about 1978 don’t rust.

Not uncommon on those. I believe the shock towers were the biggest concern, but W210s have plenty of other corrosion issues.
